HIRING SALARY RANGE: $19.72 - $23.66 per hour

POSITION SALARY RANGE: $19.72 - $31.55 per hour

 

SUMMARY OF JOB DESCRIPTION:

Assists with health needs of students, including maintenance of health records, under the supervision of assigned School Nurse, Director of Health Services, and School Principal.

 

SUPERVISED BY: School Principal/School Nurse/Director of Health Services

 

ESSENTIAL JOB ELEMENTS: 

  • Complete special/routine assignments independently and work within the confines of district and state policies, guidelines, and protocols. 
  • Always use universal precautions and model for staff and students. 
  • Assess students in emergency situations; determine appropriate actions to follow and persons to notify.
  • Follow accredited First Aid and CPR procedures and utilize appropriate skills to respond effectively in emergencies in accordance with Colorado Emergency Guidelines for Schools.
  • Adhere to student health care plans and medication permission forms.
  • Follow infectious disease guidelines for school and child care settings
  • Function as health team member on the Emergency Response Team when present at scheduled school. 
  • Anticipate the medical needs presented by special events and situations, including field trips. 
  • Remain flexible with the schedule and accept new assignments as needed. 
  • Consult with the school nurse by phone regarding student's health status, particularly when unstable or questionable, and assist in carrying out the appropriate interventions according to the student's health plan (i.e. administering medication, contacting parent/guardian, or initiating a specific procedure). 
  • Maintain professional and effective working relationships with the school nurse, staff and general public and create a positive rapport with parents and students. 
  • Maintain timely and accurate task completion.
  • Follow the Colorado Department of Education (CDE) definition of an Unlicensed Assistive Personnel (UAP) and remain within the scope of a health assistant.
  • Implement the Colorado Immunization Law and related district policies. 
  • Maintain up to date on required training and certifications.
  • Maintain a record of clinic activities, admissions and withdrawals and cumulative health/immunization records for each student while working within the strict confines of confidentiality. 
  • Compile Health Concerns lists. 
  • Initiate and assure completeness of accident/illness incident forms, including follow-up statements. 
  • Assume the responsibility for keeping the health office clean, orderly and adequately supplied. 
  • Assure that prescribed and non-prescribed medications are secured and dispersed according to appropriate protocol.
  • Monitor medication and supplies expiration dates.
  • Assist with compilation of data for state, district and other reports.
  • Assist in training new health assistants. 
  • Follow procedures and delegated tasks, as assigned, within the Health Care Plan of students with special health needs, e.g. student lifting/transfers, tube feedings, diabetes, seizures, nebulizer treatments, diapering and catheterization. 
  • Organize, schedule and maintain records of vision and hearing screenings. 
  • Perform tasks that may involve exposure to blood/bodily fluids.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Valid community First Aid and CPR card for adult, infant and children (or acquire within 6 months of hire).
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Clerical skills appropriate to duties of position.
  • Previous successful experiences with children.
  • Completion of Hepatitis B series of immunization (or acquire within six months of hire).
  • 6 months previous clerical experience or work with children.
  • Successful experience working with confidential information in an office setting.
  • Bilingual (Spanish/English) preferred.
